Mathers Bridge is located in Florida, USA, and connects the southern tip of Merritt Island to Indian Harbour Beach. It was first built by a private businessman, John Mathers. Back then, the bridge was made of wood. In 1952 the state of Florida replaced it with a refurbished steel swing bridge.
It spans the Banana River just before it empties into the Intracoastal Waterway. The bridge provides a vital transportation link between the two areas, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to cross the water body and access the respective destinations on either side.
Interesting side note about the bridge's initial start and stop in the early 1900s. When the private financiers backed out of the deal to build the bridge, Mathers reportedly used his money to complete it in 1926. It is one of the seven remaining truss bridges in Florida.
